1658 Market Street at Gough - 415-552-2522
Considered by many including media food legend Michael Bauer to be the finest burger to be had in San Francisco, this great and original restaurant and bar is one of the best in many categories as well. A pie slice shaped space with street level to roof top windows and a southwestern arts and crafts appearance, this vibrant Parisian style brasserie opened in 1979 to roars of approval, has stayed popular and packed ever since. They are best known for a great caesar salad, roast chicken and their burger in local food lore and each is still a stellar offering. An extensive menu far beyond those outstanding offerings is always available and equally excellent. The burger is prime beef, gently hand former into a generous soft ball sized patty and mesquite grilled to order. They serve it with pickled onions, excellent tomato and lettuce and ramekins of house made catsup and mustards. It comes on lightly grilled foccacio and is a hearty, delicious and sensuous meal.
Zuni offers some of the best fries (pommes frites) to be found anywhere in the world and all the sides, condiments as well as the service are of the highest caliber. There is a full bar that is equally popular and crowded that is covered with copper that is well polished and stocked with the finest spirits money can buy. A great wine list is also part of the experience as is superb service by an attentive, well trained and courteous staff. They also have some outstanding desserts, all housemade like every item on their menu. This is a great restaurant that produces a great burger.
