Washington Square Bar & Grill
1707 Powell Street – San Francisco
415-982-8123
Located on the western side of Washington Square Park in the heart and soul of North Beach is the first great saloon of a trio of transplants who gave San Francisco one of its best saloons ever, the Washbag. Ed and Mary Etta Moose and the late Sam Dietsch conspired with the best of intentions to grace we left coasters with a saloon where people who are the center of the culture and political life of our city would gather to dine, drink and dish together in good will and hard times. This dynamic trio imbued their soon to be bustling restaurant and saloon with good food as well as good drink and the chance to watch movers and shakers from around the world enjoy the freedom a great saloon offers all who gather to relax and share the days doings. An important part of their menu from the first day was a burger, and thank God, it still is.
They started a lot of great traditions never duplicated and they also gave us a great burger that was the perfect marriage of Italian pride and Irish stubbornness with a Jewish mother thrown in to make it all work. A generous hunk of hand formed ground chuck, grilled to order and served on real 'North Beach French Bread' was what they gave us and current owner Guy Ferri, after a rocky start, still delivers to the politically savvy, artistic relevant and irreverent wannabes who flock to this bohemian, beat, hip and happening saloon that serves a great burger. There’s nothing quite like having one of their great burgers at the bar as one of the best bartenders in America mixes a perfect drink or pulls a great chilled draft beer. Great burgers in great surroundings.
