Ed and Mary Etta Moose, along with Sam Dietsch started their San Francisco saloon keeping careers across Washington Square Park on Powell Street with the creation of the infamous Washington Square Bar & Grill, affectionately known for decades as the ‘Washbag’ that still graces the park under different ownership. After years of being the hippest media, political and cultural watering hole in town, this spirited team took a breather and regrouped so they could evolve and bring forth the fabulous Moose’s. Both saloons are great and each has always served a great burger, the kind that powerful and widely traveled people grow used to where ever they go and that is consistently outstanding in every way. Moose’s offers a white linen experience in a dining area and bar that reminds one of a picture perfect, modern urban town hall overlooking the town square. Elegantly sophisticated and timeless, this warm and inviting place feels like a kid glove and fits that well. The dining room is expansive, clean and simple with a discreet black baby grand piano midway between entrance, bar and dining room.
Noise is kept within reason by good design and the tone set by Ed Moose who hold forth like all great publicans, with charm, grace and authority. When ordering the burger, one sees it’s a proud part of the menu and they treat it with respect. Fine ground chuck hand formed to a large patty and cooked to order, then served on a lightly toasted bun that is well designed to absorb drippings and contain all one puts in the bun to complement the meat and bread, this is just right. Generous amount of good lettuce, tomato and red onion, a pickle and a choice of condiments round out their offering, and their fries are delicious, cooked to perfection and generous in portion. This place is great for people watching, table hopping, great bar tenders and focal point in any time spent in beautiful North Beach.
