Joe’s Cable Car4320 Mission Street – San Francisco, CA 415-334-6699
Long listed as home of one of the great San Francisco burgers, this outer Mission joint works in spite of itself. Operated by the same Joe since 1965 when he started serving a fresh ground chuck burger from a tiny grill with a window and slowly expanding to the simulated cable car that today offers indoor seating and a more diverse menu. Ala Carte is the style and the offerings are really good. The meat is trimmed and ground every day in their own butcher shop and is served in three sizes. The bun is specially made to accommodate Joe’s juicy high quality meat that is cooked medium rare unless ordered otherwise. The place is filled with all kinds of clutter that covers every inch of wall space and spills over where ever a space reveals itself.
Joe’s offers nine choices of cheese which itself is astounding and almost daunting but again illustrates his commitment to giving his customers the best burger experience they can ever have. Fries are outstanding and cooked to order using hand cut Idaho taters that have a distinct and fresh taste. The burgers are served open faced so you can see all of the meat and the toasted bun and dress it anyway you choose. They really show great care and dedication to serving the highest quality burger and fries and they consistently accomplish their mission. A great burger.
