Darla’s
822 Irving Street – San Francisco, CA
415-753-3275
Darla’s is the darling of burger joints in the inner sunset and has been serving up their excellent version for a long time. Never be put off by the fact that Darla’s is seldom crowded because that seems to go with this neighborhood. I used to be afraid of any restaurant that wasn’t packed, but today I am grateful. Darla’s offers a burger deluxe that is two third pound rectangular patties grilled perfectly, topped with two slices of American cheese they melt just right and then they dress the lightly toasted French roll and put their condiments on and add their lightly salted shoestring fries in a large portion and you can even have this repast outside on their patio which is urban heaven for this city dweller.
Taking a moment to reflect on why Darla’s isn’t more crowded and bustling brings to mind several possible observations that include the design and décor which always feels unfinished and unimportant to the owners. There is a feeling that they could use someone who knows and understands Feng Shui to try and give them a better chance at the success their food quality deserves. The staff are friendly and helpful but also seem remote and stand offish which doesn’t breed acclaim and devotion. This is a great neighborhood diner type restaurant close to Golden Gate Park that serves up a great burger, but also does excellent comfort food brunch and dinners.
