The Bull's Head

The original Bull's Head is up in West Portal near the entrance to the Metro tunnel to go back downtown and its an institution that just added an outpost on 18th Street near Collingwood in the Castro. Famed for their burgers and long offering buffalo as a choice in their burger repetroire, they do a good job with a lot of unusual choices in this erzatz steak house doubling as a pub from a very foreign place. The ingredients are all good, and the prices are fair, but for some reason the whole thing always feels incomplete to this writer. The service might be part of my challenge with this place because the wait staff are either indifferent or over zealous in selling add ons which isn't good even in a Burger King. Sometimes the meat is cooked perfectly, and some times its so far away from how ordered it has to go back. On a good day, everything works and is good which makes for a terrific burger experience and one leaves with that deep satisfaction only a good burger, brew and fries can give a strapping lad or lassie. One other thing that might dampen my enthusiasm for The Bull's Head is lack of attention to cleanliness, but its not obvious or threatening, just a persistent lack of attention to detail, and coupled with erratic service and delivery as ordered it can be disappointing. A great place when it works and well worth a visit just to see it.
